Maggie Poulin - Motherhood and MMA

Unsung Hero Clothing

At 15 years old, Maggie Poulin of Timmins, Ontario started kickboxing to stay active after she stopped playing hockey and dancing. What she didn’t know at the time was that this would be the beginning stages of something much larger for her future.

Maggie and husband, Matthew Poulin are the proud owners of the Total Martial Arts Centre better known as TMAC specializing in MMA, Muay Thai Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Northern Ontario. The husband and wife duo along with their powerhouse team of instructors have expanded the brand over the last 22 years with additional programs to offer their services to a much larger market.

The Poulin’s passion for martial arts has not only proven growth within their entrepreneurship venture but it also fuels their own personal competitiveness. So much so that two days after they had their second boy, Maggie was back teaching classes. After six weeks she was training full time again with a goal of entering competition. What started with Jiu Jitsu Tournaments progressed to MMA and Muay Thai fights. Her resiliency would land her an opportunity of a lifetime.

"I came home from work and my husband (aka coach) sat me down and told me that he had been contacted for me to fight at the pro level. I was ecstatic to say the least"

The mother of two was signed to a three fight deal with TKO. A goal she had documented for 2019. Although her focus is at an all-time high to compete at an elite level it hasn’t taken away from her priorities at home.

Her recipe for juggling an overwhelming daily workload: time management.

“It's not about what you do, it's how you manage it all within a day.”

As an advocate of practicing what she preaches this has been her structure for balancing daily meals, attending school functions, soccer practice, training, housekeeping, business, teaching, yoga and having a strong relationship with her husband.

Her meal prepping on weekends has also sparked a new venture currently in development. With passion for cooking and her understanding that nutrition is one of the most important components for any athlete or individual, she’s determined to help others with a meal prepping service.

Highlighting Maggie’s progression is another great reminder that with undeniable passion and a strong family foundation there’s no feat too big, it’s all about how you execute.
